The tsunamis
that ravaged Southeast Asia had the greatest effect
on the island nation of Sri Lanka. More than 38,000
dead, 250,000 homeless and 1 million displaced. And
the worst is yet to come. Disease and more deaths are
inevitable due to the contamination of clean water and
food. The effects of a few horrendous tidal waves will
be felt for years to come.
To help
in the relief efforts, a fund has been established by
the Florida Buddhist Vihara. UNICEF Executive Director
Carol Bellamy did not hesitate when asked what form
of aid would be best for Americans to send. "I
know people like to send cans of food or clothing, but
the fact is money can get what people need quickest."
In this
vein, any monetary contribution you can make is appreciated.
Although the Florida Buddhist Vihara is a religious
organization, please be assured that your contribution
to the Disaster Relief Fund will be used ONLY for the
sole purpose of providing the basic life necessities
to those in Sri Lanka that have been gravely affected
by the tsunamis.
All contributions
will be diverted to immediate disaster relief work through
Kande Vihara, one of the largest temples in the southeastern
region of Sri Lanka. Kande Vihara has been established
as a disaster shelter for the region. We also appreciate
your efforts in publicizing this disaster relief fund
among your acquaintances. (Click
here for a printable version of this page.) If not
this fund we encourage you to help with any other charity
available to you.
You can
donate by credit/debit card, check, cash, or money order.
Since the Florida Buddhist Vihara, is an incorporated,
non-profit, religious organization your donations are
tax deductible. If you need a receipt for donations
less than $250, please request one and we will promptly
send one to you. Per tax law, a written acknowledgement
is needed for a contribution of $250 or greater for
that contribution to be claimed for a deduction. We
will gladly provide this to you.
