Yard
Sale at Meadow Pointe. (Saturday, January 8th, 2005) |
|
| |
The tsunamis
that ravaged Southeast Asia on December 26th, 2004 had
a devastating impact on the island nation of Sri Lanka.
More than 47,000 dead, 750,000 homeless, 1.5 million
displaced from their homes, 8,200 injured, and 16,000
still missing. And the worst is yet to come. Disease
and more deaths are inevitable due to the contamination
of clean water and food. The effects of those horrendous
tidal waves will be felt for years to come.
One of the ways that the local Sri
Lankan community is trying to help in the relief and
rebuilding effort is to hold yard sales throughout the
Tampa Bay area. The yard sale at Meadow Point was a
great success. This was in great part due to the generosity
of the local community (not just the Sri Lankan community).
For days before the sale and also during the sale, complete
strangers (of all cultures, religions, colors and backgrounds)
donated their materials and time to the yard sale. It
was certainly overwhelming although not too surprising.
The greatness of the local community shined through
at a time when it was needed the most.
The yard sale raised $1,002.00.
100% of this money will go directly to Sri Lanka to
help those in dire need.
On behalf of approximately 2 million people in Sri Lanka
affected by the tsunamis, the Tampa Bay Sri Lankan community
would like offer our deepest heartfelt gratitude.
