Progress of the Florida Buddhist Vihara Housing Project

Ms. Maubrey Ginige, the Sri Lanka Regional Logistics Manager of Sara Lee Courtaulds, is currently involved in several construction projects for Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. The Florida Buddhist Vihara Housing Project in the district of Galle has been placed under her supervision. We are fortunate to have secured a reliable and resourceful person like Ms. Ginige to manage the Housing project in Sri Lanka with no additional cost. She has reserved the services of the following people for the Housing Project in Monrovia Watta, Hikkaduwa:

  Consultant:

Mr. Keerthi Fernando, Chartered Architect
General Manager, Sierra Property Development (PVT) LTD

  Contractor:
  Anil Chadraratne, Chandraratne Civil Constructors

  Project Location-Monrovia Watta Hikkaduwa

The Committee formed on the 23rd of January to assist the Florida Buddhist Vihara in the initiation of the Housing Project has successfully completed the planning phase. Ms. Ginige has agreed to oversee the Housing Project through its completion; therefore, the need for a Committee in Florida to guide the project seemed unnecessary and a decision was made to dissolve the Committee on the 1st of May. The management of the accounts for the Sri Lanka Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund has been placed under the supervision of Tampa accountant, Mr. Daminda Ranathunga, appointed by Ven. Wipulasara Thero.

The activities of the Housing Project since April 10, 2005 are outlined below:

  • 4/20/2005: An account titled, "Disaster Relief Fund of the Florida Buddhist
Vihara" was created at the Hatton National Bank in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The account will be used for making payments for the construction costs of the Housing Project.
  • 4/28/05: A portion of the balance, $91,503.07, in the "Disaster Relief Fund for Sri Lanka" account at the Bank of America is electronically transferred to the "Disaster Relief Fund of the Florida Buddhist Vihara" account in Sri Lanka; $89,500.00 of the $91,503.07 is moved to the account in Hatton National Bank from the account at Bank of America. The remaining $2,000 is left in the Bank of America account to insure the account remains active and can therefore receive future contributions (small amounts are still being deposited). In addition to the account at the Hatton National Bank, the Bank of Ceylon account established on 1/6/05, still holds the initial deposit of $10,000 (Rs. 1,005420.06).
  • 5/2/05: Ven. Wipulasara Thera appoints Mr. Daminda Ranathunga as the Accountant to oversee the funds.
  • 5/6/05: The ground breaking and "mul gala" ceremony is held for the construction of the16 homes funded by the Florida Buddhist Vihara Housing Project. Several Buddhist monks from Kanda Vihara and local temple attend the ceremony to give their blessings to the Housing Project. (Pictures of the event can be found on the project website: www.floridabuddhistvihara.org).
  • 5/9/05: The first invoice of Rs.1,000000.00 is paid from the Bank of Ceylon account to the Contractor through Ms. Maubrey Ginige.(for the invoices charged to the account at Hatton National Bank, the endorsement of the invoices by Ven Wipulasara and Mr Ranathunga is required, prior to disbursement of funds).
